AI Isn’t Dumb, You’re Being Lazy
We blame AI for failures that are really about our own lack of craft with the tool. A better approach: treat models like programmable blank slates and specify tasks clearly.

We are living through a big transition. AI is sliding into daily work, not crashing in. That slow merge gives us time to react. Many people fill that time with complaints.
The Complaint Culture
You have probably heard the tone. Someone tells a story about how AI "fucked up." They replay the task they gave it. They read the worst lines out loud. Everyone laughs. It becomes a small performance. The point is not to fix the work, it is to show the model is incompetent.
Why We Enjoy the Stories
Why do we enjoy that? Part of it is fear. We want to feel valued for our skills. We like being the one who knows the shortcut, who writes the clean function, who nails the draft on the first pass. When AI exceeds us in a narrow task, even once, it stings. So we reframe. We call the tool dumb. We tell the story at lunch. We make the audience nod along. The feeling of status returns.
The Real Problem
The problem is that these complaints often reveal more about the user than the model. If a result is bad, the brief was bad. If the model is confused, the instructions were vague. If the output misses context, we never gave it context. That is not a moral failing. It is a skill gap.
How We Treat Humans vs. AI
Think about how we treat a new teammate. You do not say, "Write a report." You say, "Write a two page report for executives, include these three metrics, use this data, adopt this voice, deliver a summary first, show the source for each number." You give an example. You give constraints. You ask for a draft, not a final. If the draft misses, you comment and iterate. Most people do not do that with AI. They toss one sentence at it, hate the first try, and declare the tech broken.
A Simple Test
Here is a simple test. Next time you want code, do not say, "Write me a scraper." Say, "You are writing a Python scraper for a single page. Use requests and BeautifulSoup. Handle timeouts. Respect robots.txt. Extract the article title, author, date, and body text. Output JSON. Here is a sample HTML snippet. Here is a failing test. Make it pass." Then run it. If it breaks, paste the error back in and say, "Fix the bug, explain the fix, keep the constraints." Watch what happens in two or three rounds.
Writing Example
Or take writing. Instead of "Write a marketing plan," try, "Act as a B2B SaaS marketer. Audience is CFOs at mid-market firms. Product cuts cloud costs by 30 percent. Tone is sober, not hype. I want a one page plan with three channels, expected CAC, sample copy for one email, and a 90 day calendar. Use this past campaign as a model." Then ask, "What assumptions did you make? Where are the risks?" You will get something you can use.
Acknowledging Real Limits
You might say, "But sometimes AI really does fail." True. Models hallucinate. They get math wrong. They refuse tasks for safety reasons. They can be brittle. All true. The point is not that the model is perfect. The point is that most day to day misses are fixable with better instructions, better context, and one or two feedback loops. Treat the first output as a first draft. Not a verdict.
A Capability-First Mindset
This is why a capability-first mindset helps. Assume the model can do it, then try to unlock it. Think of the model as a blank slate you program with plain language. Give it a role. Give it constraints. Feed it examples. Ask it to think out loud. Set tests. Iterate. When you start from "it can," you get curious. You poke at the edges. You find features you would have missed.
Simple Habits That Make the Difference
A few simple habits make the difference:
- State the goal, audience, constraints, and format.
 - Provide context, examples, and source material.
 - Ask for a plan before a final answer, then approve or adjust the plan.
 - Add a small test or checklist the output must pass.
 - Iterate twice before you judge capability.
 
The Shift
The shift is small but profound. Move from fear and complaint to experimentation and programming. Replace the lunch story with a process. When you assume capability and learn to prompt with care, you stop proving what AI cannot do. You start revealing what it can.
